Conventional mattresses used on divan beds have the advantage of a divan base to provide support and structure to the mattress. Using this type of mattress on a bedstead can often lead to a compromise in sleeping comfort because the base support is provided by wooden slats. For this reason, Rest Assured developed the Classic Bedstead range, which don’t need a divan base to provide 100% support.

The Rest Assured Bedstead Classic 1000 is the entry-level mattress into this range, but it still boasts an impressive list of features. Built on 1000 Individually responsive single comfort pocketed springs, this is a perfect medium tension mattress. Special reinforcing under the spring unit provides the support normally provided by a divan base. I’m not a big believer in orthopaedic beds for bad backs. I’d have thought that lying on a rock hard bed would cause more back damage than good, but medical advice says otherwise, so who am I to argue?

To overcome my skepticism of firm tension mattresses, I decided to test our the Rest Assured Pocket Classic Ortho, Austen 1400, a 5FT divan bed that had been sitting in our demo area for a couple of months.

Remember, I’m not a fan of firm beds!

The Austen is, like all other Rest Assured beds, extremely well made. It uses pocket springs for it’s spring unit (1400 of them) and is topped with natural fillings, so it still feels soft even though it is firm.

Additional features include smooth silk and pure wool fillings, and the mattress is hand-tufted to give it that feeling of quality.

The mattress doesn’t need to be turned either, which is probably a good thing if you’ve got a bad back!

The big question: Is it comfortable?

Umm, yes. Surprisingly it isn’t bad. It’s definitely more firm than I’d like, but I still managed a good nights sleep and didn’t wake up with a sore back. I don’t know the science behind orthopeadic beds and how they can help people with back/spinal problems, but if they do help you, the Rest Assured Pocket Classic Ortho Austen 1400 is the perfect bed for you.

The pocket spring system offers many benefits over the more traditional open coil spring unit, because pocket spring work independently to its neighboring spring each spring offers its own individual support depending on the amount of pressure been applied to it. This means the spring will give support where needed. This system also works well for 2 people sleeping together as each partner will not be disturbed from the others movement during the night.

The base is well constructed and the drawers gilde easily open on the runners. Drawer options of standard and continental are available for this model and it also comes with a padded top base as standard, this will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel.

The mattress has 1000 independent pocket springs sewn into individual cotton pockets with layers of natural fillings on top of the spring system which gives this mattress a very comfortable feel. The Mattress has 3 rows of side stitching to help keep all the springs in place. The top of the mattress has been tufted with felt tufts, this again helps keep all the fillings in place and allows for a comfortable sleeping surface. Because there are only one layer of fillings on top on the spring system this mattress is a non turn so the mattress will only need rotating head to toe.

The Pocket classic ortho will retail for around £400 on a 4FT 6 Double which is a reasonable price considering the type of fillings and spring system been used. a definite purchase for those looking for a pocket sprung bed with a firmer feel.
